We Had It All Poem by Rod Morris

We Had It All

Rating: 3.5

I sit and write my thoughts; remembering youth was fine,
Pondering on the present; soon lost in earlier time.
Happiness of childhood awash with daring, caring days.
Hide-and-seek, hopscotch; bull-rush; life a happy phase.

We only had a general store; a library, butcher, baker.
Lollypops, liquorice straps; all bagged in brown paper.
Walking miles to shops and schools; kept us in good fettle,
Feet as tough as razor strops from hot-footing it on mettle.

Dental nurse say's" Open wide"; using slow old drill,
Nerve-wracking probing efforts finding cavities to fill.
Kids' line up for measles needles as long as morning talks,
First timers dreading prick to come; eyes stick out on stalks.

Sprucing up for a date; so nervous, look your best,
Knife edge crease in trousers matching tie and vest.
Shoes shone like a mirror reflect you're anxious face,
Inner thoughts a turmoil; must slow down this pace.

Time to set this night a whirl; to let your flag unfurl.
She's a dream this gorgeous girl; real as natural pearl.
Dancing cheek to cheek with delightful pretty miss,
Highlight is to walk her home; steal a goodnight kiss.

Family that may follow let they're lives be lightness
Their experiences and dreams filled with brightness.
These times though long gone always remain a memory,
Engraved as magic mind-moments, not just a mystery.
