We Have Been Told Poem by Francis Duggan

We Have Been Told

In a century from now in this old town
Will cars and trucks the streets buzz up and down
Puffing their black smoke to the urban sky
We have been told the oil wells are running dry?

We have been told climate change is happening fast
That humanity's better days are of the past
For our abuse of our environment the price we must pay
I only quote here what the experts do say.

We abuse our Earth Mother who does serve us well
But she can make life for us an Earthly Hell
Of more cyclones and earthquakes we read of and hear
Of the anger of Nature we've reason to fear.

We have been told in the Planet climate change is taking place
That Global warming is a huge threat to the human race
The Polar ice caps melting and sea levels rise
And things are much worse than we even realize.
