What Are We Poem by Rex-mayor Ubini

What Are We

What are we?
What are we?
These shadows floating in a single space,
With the skeleton of earth,
Travelers who sojourn here
Nurturing in the still of mind
The offers of eternal fate,
Yet live as though they are fairy tales.
If it were so then,
We are nothing but fairies.
But as the sun, the moon,
The rivers, the sea with water so blue,
The rainbow awaken in the sky for sins
Not yet tied to the scape-goat of peace,
The mountains, the rocks,
As tangible as the trees
So are we so real.

If it comes so easy with fear to menace us
Whereby for haven, we are drawn
Closer to our very source,
It would come so natural with love, for freedom,
Liberating us from lust, greed, ego-centrism,
Ignorance who dares to shield the ray of truth
From reaching our pupil,
And all the spirits that wages war with us.

And when at last we have it,
Etched on every wall hugging us
Then, the whole creation would be amazed
To eye the manifestation of the beautiful ones;
Who are not yet born
Who shall be born out of us,
Not these hypocrites,
Who are neither divine nor demons.
A being striving to touch the sky of perfection
Yet is dragged down by the gravity of its very nature.

When we have it,
Flowing naturally from within,
Like sweet sounds in harmony
Accustomed to only what is right in the eyes of the sun
Then, the hosts to the living and the past on lives,
Would smile at the appearance of a wedding gown;
A virgin bride with only one expectation,
No longer of doom
But of the glorious groom
Whom at a distant hour paid to earth
The most valuable dowry
That left history dumbfounded.

So I say, we are a wonder,
A substance more precious than a diamond,
A sight that will always beckon
The demons of envy and jealousy.
Hence we must put on
The true weapon of warfare:
Love which is able to liberate us.
