What They Do Poem by Adele Katie Bowling

What They Do

in this country of ours
there's sometimes dark hours
when things go wrong
some people are strong
we should honor them
for everything they do
for everyone, me, and you

how I wish I had the strength
to do what they do everyday
though they have little and are few
the strength's inside me and you
reaching out a helping hand
pulling others up to stand
behind a cross or a flag
how I wish I had the courage
to do what they do
what they do
to do what they do
what they do

AIDS goin' 'round in Africa
shootings in America
floods and fires, what to do?
hope becomes easy to lose
people dying everywhere
how I wish I wasn't scared
like some people aren't

how I wish I had the strength
to do what they do everyday
though they have little and are few
the strength's inside me and you
reaching out a helping hand
pulling others up to stand
behind a cross or a flag
how I wish I had the courage
to do what they do
what they do
to do what they do
what they do

when we are afraid
they make it okay
when we run away
they save the day
when we cannot fight
they give their lives
they gave the greatest sacrifice
and they were right

we should have the strength to stand
to reach out a helping hand
behind a cross or a flag
I guess we do have the courage

how I wish I had the strength
to do what they do everyday
though they have little and are few
the strength's inside me and you
firefighters, policemen
volunteers and soldiers
sacrificing all they have
for the freedom of this land
reaching out a helping hand
pulling others up to stand
behind a cross or a flag
how I wish I had the courage
to do what they do
what they do
to do what they do
what they do
how I wish I had the strength to do
what they do everyday
what they do everyday
what they do
what they do
what they do everyday
