What We Might Have Been Poem by Maya Reid

What We Might Have Been

We’ve been through it all
Ups and downs
Highs and lows
It’s been a long year
A long, hard year
And we’ve been tested many times
Our strength has surprised even us
As we talk about everything
Sharing secrets
Change
And pain
And I thought I wanted more
So we talked
And investigated
You were my private eye
And we figured that there was nothing more to have
Nothing more without the risk
Of nothing at all
And I was happy
I am happy
We’re as close as close can be
And I am at peace
But every time I look at you
I feel a little twinge
And despite what my head says,
My heart thinks, ‘Oh, what we might have been.’
I said I didn’t want that
I can’t take that back
Can I?
I wanna know
I wanna know
What could’ve happened
What we might have been
But if I take it back
And we try again
(If you even want to)
We might lose everything
We worked so hard to win.
So, I know where we started
But I still can’t figure out
Where we should end.
