When Dad Died Poem by george fillingham

When Dad Died

Rating: 3.8

This was my dad’s big date.
Some lessons are understood too late.

He felt lonelier than the sea
When mother died. Now he was left to me.

His girlfriend came to mother’s wake.
This broke whatever ties he wished to break.

Undisciplined, insane,
His cancer, in remission, flared again.

My eldest boy sent for the ambulance.
My dad in hospital reflected on his circumstance.

“I need to fix a lot of things, ” he said.
Two days later he was dead.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is one of many poems I have been working on relating to my dad. I have always struggled with him emotionally. We were never on the same wavelength. Every boy wants a relationship with his dad but I never could find one until the end and then only briefly.

I guess it's a case of 'too little too late' George. Too many of us know of these situations, it's up to us to give our children as much love love as we can then when we leave this mortal coil, we'll know that we'll be remembered with fondness.

Bravo! I loved how you wove those words together. Sometimes, my father and I's emotions clash as well; however, we nearly always mend the tension built up. Good luck with your father, George, Cassandra Jasmine
