Treasure Island

Mandolyn ...

when farkus laughs

he makes me smile like a clown
hopped up on rainbow sherbert...
we play Uno and he raises his brow
asks me my color
and i say 'GO NOW! '
sneaky little devil he is, my almost grown boy
laughs like Farkus
from A Christmas Story, my Christmas joy
he is.

i hope he never becomes a cop
and blows my cover, discovers i am
not as tough as i claim to be-
telling him to brush his teeth harder
study more than one page...

when he graduates high school
i'll probably cry more than just a creek
a river might be in the cards
an ocean could happen, but it will be stars
constantly burning my eyes-

when he unties from me and says
mom, it's time to let go
i'll blow a kiss, but it will miss
his ever changing mind
he'll take his time
because he's always been that kind of boy

when farkus laughs
i laugh with him
and love him all the more ~

Poet's Notes about The Poem

for my awesome son who is entering Jr. High- the middle child- whom warms my heart like no other. ♥
middle children get over looked they say- not this one.
i love all my kiddos, but he is my sweetie. he's never embarrassed to hug me in public, or let me attack his head with my hand and ruff up his hair. they grow up in the blink of an eye. that part is true!

ARM’D year! year of the struggle!
No dainty rhymes or sentimental love verses for you, terrible year!
Not you as some pale poetling, seated at a desk, lisping cadenzas
