When I Close My Eyes Poem by Jeffrey Stultz

When I Close My Eyes

A short time ago,
a few days at most,
I was a contented man;
but then all at once,
everything changed,
and I'm changing all of my plans.

When I was alone,
I was never lonely;
until you came along,
now I love you only.
When I close my eyes,
then I see your face;
and in the quiet times
I hear the echo of your voice.

Now when I’m with you,
my heart is at rest;
I haven’t a care in the world;
But when you’re away,
nothing seems right,
and my heart is all in a whirl

What am I to do?
my heart is all undone;
I am the lucky one,
I’m so in love with you.
When I close my eyes,
then I see your face;
and in the quiet times,
I hear the echo of your voice.

My love let me say,
until you came my way,
my heart never knew its great need;
but there’s no turning back,
O alas and alack,
from champagne when you’ve known
only mead.
