When I Leave You Poem by Michael Garrett

When I Leave You

Rating: 4.8

When I leave you with my last goodbye
That I pray shall come from these lips
As I sink slow and peaceful, into imperceptible darkness.
Think not that I had to die
Trust that you will come to grips
Remember me and celebrate, with exceptional archness.

My friends, children and lovely wife
If you see I have left you behind
Know I've gone ahead, to join my father's fraternity.
For my Loves you were my life
And all that did consume my mind
Our time together is the stream I'll ride, into eternity.

I remember we'd watch the seasons past
Excitedly waiting whichever was next
So it seems my voyage ends, having reached my destination.
Since our deaths we cannot forecast
Waste no time to perplex
Picture me with the stars, if you will a constellation.

That shall light the dark at night
And in the day the sun shall do
I will hold the vigil, on the shores of perpetuity.
With my father on my right
For when your times come due
Do not fret; you'll see our light, with acuity.

So when indeed my last goodbye
Does finally reach your ears
Celebrate the man you knew, in ecstatic verve.
Cheer me with bourbon or rye
And pack the cooler full of beers.
We'll crack ours on the other side, your spot we will reserve.
