Mandolyn ...

when we were deep fried, powdered in sugar

i wanted you to know me
in my brightest dress
but i was a mess
and we were late for funnel cake

so i wore my boot cut jeans
the ones you liked on me
your eyes played piggy back
gently hopping on my legs

my smile, hot pink
but my insides were a theme park
gum stuck to your shoe
my lips, icee blue

was i what you wished for on your birthday?
now, miles away
we talk like we are sixteen
tangled up in a phone cord

pop corn conversations
cotton candy in my hair
i swear-

it's never fair
without you
