Which Is Your Portion? Poem by Rubaba Mmahajia Rahma Sabtiu

Which Is Your Portion?

Allah is a big god in Mecca
Muhammad was an imposter
Islam was spread by the sword
Jihad is holy war
Qur’an commands killing of innocent people
Muslims are terrorists
Hijab is an oppression
Muslim women are treated inferior
Education is only for men
Muslims are uncivilized people
Muhammad was a womanizer
Muslim men are also womanizers
Islam promotes violence
Muslims are taught suicide bombing
Muslims are not peaceful
Muslims this…
Muslims that…
I opened my eyes suddenly
I was not dreaming
And my eyes were not really closed
I could hear the distinct words clearly
Heart beating and limbs shaking
Mouth opens and closes
Words inaudible
Allah! Muhammad! Islam! Muslims!
Where from those voices?
Where are their faces?
Jumping back to reality and thinking
Where from these blasphemies?
I asked Mr A
Ever been to Makkah? No!
Do you know Muhammad? No, Mrs B said.
What is the Hijab?
‘I don’t know, ’ said Miss C
Can you tell me the history of Islam?
Mr D said; ‘I have no idea.’
Have you read the Qur’an before?
Do you know the status of women in Islam?
‘Honestly, I haven’t and I don’t’’ she said
So then WHY? I screamed
The same were the owners of the voices
They said what they knew not
Holding unto misconceptions like it is their life
Fearing to let go in order to face reality
Walking into a book store
They could easily buy the Qur’an
But no! They would rather be painters
Painting Islam nothing but black
If you don’t know, find out
If you won’t find out, shut up!
Why must Muslims and Islam face the court?
When one Muslim allegedly goes wrong?
Why must it always be; ‘I don’t know but…’
Truth they say is sometimes bitter
Is it not better than a sweet lie?
But of course!
The Muslims are quiet
Are we not the voice of Islam?
Why have we folded our arms and relaxed?
Why are our hands in our laps?
Because we are cool with it
It is not a matter of guns and swords
It is all about OUR VOICES
And that is the real Jihad
The load is heavy for one hand
For many hands, it is weightless
Here lies the load
Which is your portion?
