Who Are We? Poem by Rose Jones

Who Are We?

Are we us
Or are we just a dream
A collection of images
A collage of people
Said to be us
We are all actors
Whether we like it or not
But at least we are happy
Even if we are not our selves
Because I, here
In front of you
Am not me
I am an image
A warped creation
Fitting into a mold
The mold of society
Because we have to
We must be in the mold
For fear of being outcast
But really, it is as good as lying
But lying is bad, right
It isn'twhat people are supposed to do
Under even a pseudonym
Authors cannot hide
But sometimes others get the blame
And as a poet
In my life
I must tell truth
And live with the consequences
And who are we
To tell those people who we call
Goth
Gay
Idiot
Retarded
That they are to right
They are the bravest of all
Those who are not afraid to tell the truth
Those who are them selves
They are almost better than us
Cowering behind false identities
But we, who are all kin
Turn against one another
Even if we say beyour self
Brothers and sisters take up arms
I am not saying
Those slaughtering many are good
Only that we should avoid conflict
Because who we are
Is the only thing that matters most
But we have already lost it
