Why? Poem by Terry Brewer

Why?

Why will man ask why?
Why this, and why that,
Why is the earth held in the sky?
Why is a fat man fat?

No single thing can go free
Inviolate from man’s ‘why’,
Not the rivers nor the deep blue sea
Nor the stars beheld on high.

Perhaps man’s little grey cells
Get greyer every day
And this the word ‘why’ spells
In many a new way?
