Why Can’t We Just Pretend – Sonnet #17 Poem by Stephanie Eve Kane Arado

Why Can’t We Just Pretend – Sonnet #17

Why can’t we just pretend we’re friends at last
After rage and threats both evaporate
Though all those rotten apples of the past
Take the bad and leave the good on your plate
Once when times were ‘specially good’ between us
We shared the wine and broke our bread freely
The bills would come and you’d begin to cuss
Preferring wine to work, tough and steely
While I was always working through the slack
And raising our daughter as a good girl
Struggle and weight of life upon my back
You lay in bed and watched your own toes curl
I’m sorry, friend, its true we have to part
Next time I’ll use more manner and less art
