Xanadu Poem by Temitope Adebowale

Xanadu

Even though i crave immortality
I will need to brave the grave to get it
With my head in a peaceful bow to this life
I will row into tomorrow
Though without a fair judgement
For i got plucked from air down to the nadir
Being on X{1} at the moment of fall
I forgot my xenagogy{2} to Xanadu{3}
With impunity
I let down my hard-earned integrity and tussle with the trinity
Knowing I cannot change anything
I will not cry, no, i will not sob
I will follow this crookedly straight path
While I accommodate the little giggles, i will adulterate my moments of despair with great laughter
Till I find Xanadu, even in this Hades.

{1} slang for Ecstasy, a type of street drugs
{2} a guidebook
{3} the summer capital of Kubla Khan, an ancient Mongol emperor.
