Yahoo Chat Poem by Adeoye Adetoba

Yahoo Chat

The last connection was restored
And yahoo messenger reactivated.
ENTER. The black finger jammed the keyboard
That sprung baited words to the screen.
He swore to be the secretary to the
Prime minister cut short in the war.
'NO NEXT OF KIN. NONE WITH THE KNWOLEDGE
OF HIS VAST DEPOSITS.'
The blue eye squinted at the message
And documents conveyed across the Atlantic.
'LOCATION? ' Question sought fraternity.
'REFUGEE CAMP.' Answer linked with understanding.
'HOW TRUE? ' A bit of doubt demanded clarity
But the camcorder poked blind by the black finger
Veiled the ominous darkness.
'HOW REAL IS THE DEAL? '
The last vestige of doubt beamed for reason.
Caught not unprepared but with a handful of logic
Strung amidst the honking of cars on the busy streets,
Shuffling of feet and chairs in the small cybercafé
Nestled in the boisterous city of the tropical sun,
The black finger raced over the keyboard.
'AS REAL AS SLAVE SHIPS CROSSED THE ATLANTIC.
AVAIL YOUR ACCOUNT DETAILS
AND WEALTH WILL MANIFEST IN WIRED DIGITS.
TWENTY FOR YOU, EIGHTY FOR ME.'
Objection waved from the well-furnished room
Surrounded by flowers, conifers and descending snow
Through the quiet city draped in white.
When it came, the black finger, itchy for a catch
Laid a sumptuous bait. 'SEVENTY-THIRTY.'
Objection beamed back till mid-balance struck.
The grim blue eye melted with a smile.
Diversion was the word kept from drifting
Across the time zones.
The Atlantic wind couldn't catch a whiff.
Hundred-zero, the screen will read with reality.
'BUZZ! ' The black finger broke the witty silence
'CASH WILL BE NEEDED TO FACILLITATE THE TRANSFER.
CASH-STRAPPED I AM, HERE, IN THE REFUGEE CAMP.'
The anxiety in the tropical sun produced a smirk
In the freezing snow.
Sets out to empty his accounts for a bigger bounty
To be ripped from the land of the sun.
Bank alert beeped amidst the honking of cars.
The black finger ended his romance with the keyboard
And the connection shredded into pieces again.
