Yes I Am Poem by Abena Truth

Yes I Am

Strong and virtuous, yes I am,
Black and proud, yes I am,
Happy and a women, yes I am,
Mother of this world, yes I am,

For to long I have been degraded
Made to feel like dirt
Kicked and abused
As if I, a Black women, can not feel hurt,

Stripped of all dignity,
Reduced to a word,
I may be Black, but Black is not what I am

You can not define me,
I am not a word,
I am a person,
Who seeks to be heard,

I will scream from the rooftops,
Parliament and Big Ben,
So that you can understand,
I am a omen,
I am Black,
And I am Black
And I am proud of all of them
