You Poem by Sandra Feldman

You

Rating: 5.0

The days have past,
That would not last,
When happiness was King,
And in my heart,
There was a start,
Of birds wanting to sing,
Life flew away,
Like a short day,
And Love went with it too,
And here I am,
I contemplate,
So far away from You.

This poem is quite provocative. The title You makes the second person narrative more intimate but also suggests that you are referring to yourself and this poem is an introspective one and you are asking yourself what happened to your old self. But as a lost love poem it is structured quite well The short rhyming lines of an uneven metre mirror someone tryin to keep order in their life at a fairly disorderly time in one's life. Some of the imagery isn't too pertinent to the overall effect which I am getting. The recurring day image is powerful but the birds singing don't do much to develop the poem. I could be misreading the theme and the undertones but it must have been a bit more melancholic if you were going for a pensive poem. However there are some powerful evocatie lines that suggest strength (or at least feigned strength) like the proclamation And here I am...I repeat though the structure is quite pleasant with the diminishing metre and rhyme. Overall a good read.
