You And I Poem by Roger McGough

You And I

Rating: 3.8

I explain quietly. You
hear me shouting. You
try a new tack. I
feel old wounds reopen.

You see both sides. I
see your blinkers. I
am placatory. You
sense a new selfishness.

I am a dove. You
recognize the hawk. You
offer an olive branch. I
feel the thorns.

You bleed. I
see crocodile tears. I
withdraw. You
reel from the impact.

I first heard this poem last Monday evening. My beloved husband has bipolar type II disorder - at the moment he is a very needy, ill person. Very different from the strong, engaging man our world loves and respects. You and I made me cry - it describes perfectly an enduring love that sometimes goes wrong through no fault of the two individuals.

ilike this poem very much because it depicts mis reading and miscommunication among near ones. The different perspectives are aptly described.

This poem featured on the 1981 Welcome Disk for the BBC Micro. The program displaying this poem did so in a semi-random manner which results in a near continuous version, much longer than the version listed here. Very cool form of poetry.

You bleed but I visualize crocodile tears in your eyes...I sincerely appreciate the microscopic vision of the poet!
