You Don'T Understand Poem by Tiffani Williams

You Don'T Understand

You can have my past
wrapped up like a present
and tied with a bow,
so crimson, it almost glows
I don’t want the memories
I don’t want to carry it around anymore
and you said you were stronger
and you said everyone breaks some time, right?
So why, do I see disapproval in your eyes?
as I’m coming undone
and lacing off the pain
I can see you don’t understand,
like you promised you would
though you haven’t moved your lips
your eyes scream insults
you just don’t understand.
and it takes all of me
to keep going on.
and to make you see why I think the way I do
but this is all new to you
and, you wanted something old
you’re just like that clichéd old dog
in the sense

and, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks
but I wasn’t asking for much
just for understanding
and your outstretched hand’
but as if sadness was a disease, ’
you took it back
and left me hanging
and your words ‘I’m always here for you.’
You look me in the eyes
and, ask me why
I’m so sad
as if you need all the reasons
as if I haven’t told you yet

so I murmur
because no one understands,
never like they said they would

hoping you’d take the hint
but you look so cluless
and disapproving
and you say

‘get over it.’
