Treasure Island

Mandolyn ...

you hush your heart to keep me down

so here i am again
allowing the wind from the ceiling fan
to dry my eyes
so i won't cry about the sand
inside the bottle
you never filled with notes-

my name fell off your board
when you surfed sideways-
i tried to count the stars that night,
lost it when a plane went through
the fingernail of God,
the moon when it's been clipped
floating above our midnight ship

i find some dirt to fondle
in my hands- pebbles to rub
waiting to hear you crash
my growling heart
for it is hungry, famished from
running up and down the bleachers
in your benevolent eyes

if only i could sip you longer
from the straw of life's focal point,
the face of freedom
it echos all around me-

your voice is never flat
and i am forever at the base
when you come barreling down
struggling to catch your footing
arms so open they could swallow five of me

and i won't change that
not for a million gold coins
not for a lifetime of king sized beds-
this bed i answer every night
imagining you next to me-
