The Shearers - Poem by Francis Duggan

The shearers are having their breakup Christmas parties in the Southern Grampians pubs they celebrate
The end of a good shearing Season shearers from New Zealand and Interstate
In pub backyards sing around the barby they are full of warm Christmas cheer
The shearers work hard for a living and the shearers renowned drinkers of beer.

In the vast Countryside known as the Southern Grampians there are thousands and thousands of sheep
And after a hard day in the shearing shed the shearers do not need sleeping tablets to sleep
They work hard and even drink as hard for them there is no easy pay
The shearing sheds are warm working environments and shearing is sweaty work on a warm day.

For to shear in the Southern Grampians the shearers come from far and wide
And that shearers are tough individuals of them never can be denied
They have been through good times and lean times together one common bond all shearers share
If one of their kind falls on hard times of their comrade they do take care.

The shearers in the Southern Grampians are partying they drink on till late in the night
And the shearers they work hard and drink hard and the shearers are not scared of a fight
Like all big families they have their fall outs but grudges they are not known to keep
And after a hard day's work in the shearing shed they never find it hard to sleep.
