    Alphonse Karr (1808-1890), French journalist, novelist. Les Guêpes (Paris, Jan. 31, 1849). An alternative source attributes these words to a voice from the hall in the French Chamber, during a debate on the death penalty, when a speech proposing abolition was being tumultuously applauded.
