  • All I really want to be is boring. When people talk about me, I'd like them to say, "Carol's basically a short Bill Bradley." Or, "Carol's kind of like Al Gore in a skirt."
Carol Moseley-Braun (b. 1947), African American politician. As quoted in Newsweek magazine, p. 21 (February 8, 1993). Moseley-Braun, a new United States Senator from Illinois, was reacting to the exaggerated attention she was receiving as the first African American woman United States Senator. Bill Bradley (b. 1943), a Senator from New Jersey, and Vice-President Al Gore (b. 1948), formerly a Senator from Tennessee, were, like Moseley-Braun, liberal and comparatively young Democrats; both were also white, rather staid, pedestrian public speakers, and unsullied by personal scandal.
