Rebekah Wooten Poems

Nineteen

Seemly unseen
...

Paint me on fire
Paint me my most vibrant
In orange, yellow, red
Before I give in to the sigh of the wind
...

it's a floaty feeling a ceiling sort of feeling
a concealing kind of mindset
a certain way to let yourself peel away
because isn't it just easier to observe from far away?
...

Maybe stars don't twinkle
Maybe I flicker
Maybe I'm why the stars blink
Like a licking flame on a lit wick
...

I think maybe it's time to look up
Not down
Maybe it's time see it through
Maybe it's time to love ourselves
...

My life
My soul
Desolated by the careless fools that rein
This wicked destructive world
...

Leverage
It's not a staircase I have to climb
It's an elevator he pulls up by hand at the steady pace I demand
It's necessary to be to be high to be mighty
...

I do not wish to be
Your best
Nor
Your worst
...

What am I?
A child
A gut feeling
A woman
...

Have you ever fell in love with someone's laugh?

(The way she tips her head, eyes closed, mouth open)
...

I fell in love with his lips, yesterday

The way they gravitate to a
...

Joyful?
More like sorrowful...
A handful
Of dreams -shredded feathers really-
...

Nineteen

Nineteen

Seemly unseen

Is there invisibility in my genes?

Who am today

Is not who I may be tomorrow

Still I lie wide awake

Trying not to fall asleep

Laughing suddenly

I cannot control the speed

of the earth's turn

I cannot stop the world from burning

I am not needed

I roll over

A sense of freedom fills me, blissfully

I'm only nineteen

And as of now

That's all I aspire to be
