Roy Griffin Poems

I called forth a dark, dark red creature,
So dark as to be as nearly black, as black as the sunless, moonless, starless Night
At the Antipodes of my Psyche.
And I bound the creature to serve me,

I am not a bona fide ghost
In any sense well-known to most.
I've never bedded in a berm
Or been provender for a worm

I Called Forth

I called forth a dark, dark red creature,
So dark as to be as nearly black, as black as the sunless, moonless, starless Night
At the Antipodes of my Psyche.
And I bound the creature to serve me,
Justice! Justice! Justice! I cried-
But that was before I knew that Nicety
From Deadly. Poisoned. Vengeance.
That today I am gentle—or at least harmless-
May be because the Nameless
Performed well the assigned task,
Leaving me free and clean...

But now, I fear somewhere
There may be berms of earth
Cemented by tears and blood
That once gushed forth from the swish of an armored talon
Executed by my Servant.

I do not regret, insofar as a stroke was measured, true, necessary, in a word-
Just.

But for any spirits who suffered more than needed,
I am well and truly sorry,
And of them I pray forgiveness, their creators, and any of their companions
Wounded by association.

And you, faithful servant,
I thank you also.
May your present form
Be as a chrysalis of a great birth
With Beauty for a Name-
And continue to be my friend.
