The Games We Played As Children

I stand inside the cupboard my ear pressed against its brown stained wood
Listening
My heart pounds as the cold wood echoes in vibration against its chambers
My breath is chilled to white
Exhalation reveals these trails, the cold so deep I shiver
It is winter
I dare not speak
Only listen
Taking refuge here just out of sight
Like a rabbit in the burrows
Hands are numb as fingers tighten and loosen
Tighten and loosen their grip on my palm
Ba-boom Ba-boom Ba-boom
My heart beats a rhythm symmetrically off-key

The brown door creaks open
I blink and then quickly move
My feet guide me past figures crouching
The darkness adds features
Makes gruesome caricatures of ones I once new in the light
Adrenaline pumps in the chase
Filling my arms and my legs
I run fast and faster, I fly
As we continue our game of hide-and-seek
