There was a bed in my room,
With the bedsheets decorated and embroidered,
The loveliest roses you’d ever seen,
Red and gold, white and green.

Life can be seen through a magnifying glass,
That is perhaps held in God’s hand
Life can be seen through a magnifying glass,
All the seas and all the land

The Roses On My Bed

There was a bed in my room,
With the bedsheets decorated and embroidered,
The loveliest roses you’d ever seen,
Red and gold, white and green.

I was told as a little child,
That these flowers would protect me and keep my sleep mild.
And my mother would kiss me and tell me good night,
And I would close my eyes, with feelings of safety,
And then I would drift off to bed.

And for quiet a while, my sleep was so nice
I dreamt of cakes and of having no lice,
I dreamt of animals and mermaids and sea
I dreamt I was anyone, but I was still me
And I would wake up,
And I would think and I thought,
That, after all, during the night I had not fought,
There had been peace and slumber, and every thing promised,
Because the roses were there.

But Mother soon went,
She fell ill, and was weak,
I tried to have faith, but faith is for the meek,
I was bold and arrogant, yet still so dependent,
And all the tears shed my mother died.

Yet the roses were still on my bed,
I counted them, loved them, told them mother was dead
They listened and loved and hugged me all night long,
But as soon as Mother went, the roses did me wrong.

The night was horrific,
I cried and I screamed.
I dreamt of famine and dangerous lice,
I dreamt of dead animals and mermaids and a bloody sea,
I dreamt I was anyone, yet I could not return to me.

And I woke up,
And I thought and I thought,
These roses, nightmares they have wrought
I looked down,
And in horror, and shock,
The pretty roses,
Red and gold, green and white,
They had no might and were underfed,
I found in great horror that the roses were dead.
