Shannon Thompson Poems

tonight that moon looks round and hollow
the old man's face poc-marked and scarred
mirrors my heart in the reflection on the water
craters dig deep and leak into the bottom like an old abandoned well
...

rain that falls
makes no sound
unless it hits something
...

3.

if my tears don't fall
do they make a sound
...

light streams down
like on the water in a well
...

Wolf Parade fan mail:
your fancy claps beat in time
...

the air is thick with hope
but the dust clings to the lost
the debris is cleared for a new day
but was it worth the cost
...

light falls into a shadow on the floor
mixing sweat melts together
forms a bond like nothing before
bass line beats a new heart for me
...

there were stars in your eyes
shooting stars
going in the wrong direction
...

9.

I threw myself into your fire
I climbed your ladder to the sun
but it wasn't hot when i was done
your kisses burned
...

When you ask me
'What? '
There are an infinite amount of responses
sitting here
...

The scenery it blurs as it all goes round and round and round
My heart's a carousel of light and sound
but there is nothing else i've found
that's quite as clear as you.
...

being green wasn't fun
but firey passion felt each one
the tips went from sharp to dull
weathered like an old ship's hull
...

I could just melt
right here into the floor
I'd slide beneath the boards
Where sunlight slips
...

Give me your heart.
Mine has been on my sleeve awhile,
It's tired and frayed but still there.
Together, they could make a stronger beat.
...

I wrote a list of what was important to me
It ended up looking like an ingredient list for my future,
or a packing list to a vacation to a deserted island
(you know, the one you're stranded on, and you can only bring one thing)
...

Every word you shoot leaves a bullet hole,
Pokes through skin like a bayonet tip.
Silence on the ride home—our no man’s land.
I want to throw a word like a grenade,

(This is meant to be a performance poem. There will be stage directions written on the sides, heads up.)
...

ask many questions
so the one answer

there was a flash of dark
instead of light
all nothing went bright

Shannon Thompson Biography

I started expressing myself as a means to get over depression stemming from probably what is considered normal high school pressures and the search for my own identity and place in the world. I don't pretend to be any good, I like reading poetry and until recently didn't think I would ever write it. However, I have found it theraputic. After two of my poems, 'if do' and 'rain wind trees (three) ', were selected by my high school's literary magazine, I sought out better ways to put my feelings into words for the enjoyment of all. I'm interested in what you think, and what advice you could offer me.)

Man In The Moon

tonight that moon looks round and hollow
the old man's face poc-marked and scarred
mirrors my heart in the reflection on the water
craters dig deep and leak into the bottom like an old abandoned well

oh well that's love it puts your heart up in the sky then
blows holes in it with shooting stars
and forms crash bang boom slices of nothing
a little more deflated each time

but how do you keep from falling? into silence underwater
with a splash no one cares to hear but the gulls on the shore
my heart is heavy tonight it sinks deeper to the ocean floor
where it's dark but not so lonely anymore

i can still see the shooting stars and wish to feel the heat of you
but that life's yesterday and i can live aflame
even with my cold hands and make my own fire down here
the light on the surface keeps me warm until my moon's higher in the sky
than any of those shooting stars can ever fly

ever noticed how he shows up in the morning
like he's been racing the sun?
still there though it's daylight and her job's only begun
waiting till the light falls and she stumbles behind the earth
to wake tomorrow to burn with a new light for me.
