Graffiti Poem by Luz EtchemendiGaray

Graffiti

Through the cobblestoned street
beneath the heat of the sun,
I went climbing toward the field of reeds.
When I arrived, the light blinded me.
Menacing walls
blocked my path.
I wanted to reach the end,
leave this blind alley.

Fleeing from the afternoon siesta
and my nightmares,
I recalled
that when I turned that certain corner,
it was there I found it,

A graffiti scratched on an adobe wall.
I believe that my shadow wrote it
with charcoal:
'Do not forget -
I know only that you live today'

Translated from Spanish to English by D.Ginhson with comments by S.Littleton.
