I Should've Known Poem by Marcquiese Burrell

I Should've Known

I want you to leave
I have not received
what you've promised me
love is not to be
the cold reality
struck like a gust of wind
if you think there's hope,
baby, you're mistaken
if I've built a wall,
it keep my heart from breaking
No more nights awoke
wondering where you've been
I couldn't think you would
do this to me again
If that's the iron
where the fire burns
It's a place you will
most likely return
If only I've noticed
the emptiness in your eyes
I wouldn't have been
charmed into believing a lie
You have a way with words
How could I not observe
details so important?
love didn't mean a thing
love doesn't bring you pain
if someone new is to come
my heart will be guarded
No matter how long we've been apart
I don't want to love,
if they do not feel the same
I have had enough,
if it's another empty exchange
