My Wild One Poem by Paige Johnson

My Wild One

Sweet little one
How you fill up my heart
With your eyes all aglow
In ways you'll never know

Our routine is as always
My silent guardian
I wake to find you near
Like a panther you leer

Purr me into oblivion
My beautiful, delicate shade
With your heart to my own
You make this mortal shell my home

My body curls around you
Protecting my wild one
My womb can never fill
But you come from me still

Your green eyes are my anchor
When I feel my mind begin to slip
My soul sleeps within you
Within each breath I begin anew

Long whiskers tickle my face
Small paws prod my body
Little claws remind me
That the world waits to find me

My bewitching little huntress
With your nervous mind
You fear the world like I do
But together we can pull through

I fear the day that's coming
Like a freight train without breaks
That morning that I wake alone
To find the goddess took you home

My wild heart, my sweet one
Your obsidian fur, and emerald eyes
Sleep soundly in my arms and know
A mothers love burns long and slow

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I adopted my cat Mooch, when I was about 15 years old. A year later I was diagnosed with a disorder that meant I'd never give birth, I went in to a deep depression. Mooch spent weeks by my side, comforting me, and just loving me as she always has, and she just became my baby. That was 10 years ago, and my wild child is still very much my heart and soul. She even likes my husband.
