Nat King Cole
When I Fall in Love
- artist: nat king cole (whose recording, if released
As a single, did not chart)
- doris day’s version hit #20 in 1952 and
The lettermen’s went to # 7 in 1962
- words and music by edward heyman and victor young
When I fall in love it will be forever
Or I’ll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it’s begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun
When I give my heart it will be completely
Or I’ll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you.
<instrumental interlude first two lines>
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you.

There's something about the lyrics which subverts the mood of the music. People fall in love irrespective of their sureness of the other person's feelings. To make a kind of quid pro quo of falling in love denies the risk entailed in the word 'fall'. On the other hand I play this often, especially for the voice of Cole. There are no modern singers who can match his generation for intelligent interpretation of popular song.
I often play this music when I miss my boyfriend. I want to sing this song to him, but I'm very busy with my study. I hope, someday I'll sing this song to make him realize that I really love him.
