The Best Poem Of Stephen Mateus

Amherst

I dreamt within your towers,

on nights I found my bed,

and on the ones I couldn't,

stolen conversations from the drunken darkness,

whispered through your windows and kept me company,

You flipped me on my head,

and shook me loose in search of change,

regurgitated ideologies of a past life,

rained down upon your floors,

Sifting through the debris,

of my incendiary youth,

you pulled me from the depths of myself,

bit by bit,

piece by piece,

and made me whole,

Friends became estranged,

and then strangers,

strangers became friendly,

and then friends,

you,

perhaps before any other,

and then came all the rest,

the heartbreak,

the romance,

the goodbyes,

and the see you tomorrows,

the loneliness,

the birthdays,

the lectures,

and the toasts,

the cigarettes,

the coffee pots,

the missed signals,

and the inside jokes,

the front porches,

the backyards,

the basements,

and the roofs,

the will theys,

they wont theys,

the sex,

and the silent moments after,

the syllabus,

the tequila shots,

the limes that followed,

and the hangovers that followed the limes,

The good,

the bad,

the bittersweet,

and the wonderful.
