It's a cold dark grey morning
And the enemy's close by
He takes a moment for reflection
And another one to cry

She works in a store downtown
That's laid off now three times
The next ones going to shut it down
Along with her life

We'Ll Defend You

It's a cold dark grey morning
And the enemy's close by
He takes a moment for reflection
And another one to cry
He's sitting in a strange land
Wondering 'What'd I get into? '
Looks to the man beside him
Says 'If you want to know the truth

I'll defend you
Though I don't like what you say
You've got a right to say it
So until my dying day
I'll defend you
From evil and abuse
When you stand up for your freedom
I'll defend you'

It's just a small town
Like the one that he came from
But the buildings are on fire
The streets echo from the guns
She's hiding 'round the corner
With her children pulled near
When he turns back toward the battle
He can almost feel her fear

And he says, 'I'll defend you
I won't walk away
I'll hold this ground we stand on
Until my dying day
I'll defend you
From evil and abuse
When terror takes your homeland
I'll defend you'

His friends all gather 'round him
In the barracks late that night
They listen close in silence
He reads a letter from his wife
She says, 'you may not think you're heroes
But there are those of us that do
And the flag waves high above us
To honor and to prove

That we'll defend you
We will bring you home
We'll sing out loud the anthem
You'll know that you are not alone
We'll defend you
We won't walk away
We know just what you fight for
We won't forget the price you pay
We'll defend you
From evil and abuse
You stand up for our freedom
And we'll defend you
