Slipping

Red filaments of sun, going down
there's a quiet voice saying nothing,

There are many states of consciousness,
perception hides between the cracks in
the sidewalk, where the weeds make

I picked up a loose piece of birch bark,
writing nonsense as I carefully study the clouds,
the sky has many shades of gray today,
perhaps the rain will pass this way
...

And so it ends, before it begins,
evening falls on a summers' day,
crooked stones leading down to beach
a mirthful cup of wine.

She held the clouds softly in her hands,
twisting the rain out of them,
bits of floating grief lingered,
they scattered like blown laundery,

Between the shadows
a faded rose,
a secret dried inside,
the bloom gone long ago,

I saw a girl by the lake,
running towards the water,
legs lifted high as she
strutting out deeper,

Love lies between them,
waiting for one to look up,
a last look stolen from the night,
where the burden of joy

Crimson roses
mixed with greens
standing perfectly still, neatly poised,
confident and composed,
