Anna

The monitor says she’s still alive
It keeps beeping
Not inconsistently – it seems normal.
But she’s just laying there.
Her eyes haven’t opened in a least a week – since the accident.
Of all the things that could have happened in my life,
This is probably the worst.

Anna is her name but her chart says Marianne.
She hates being called by her full name.
She always says “Mom, it makes me sound so, old.”
But I thought it was beautiful, just like her.
And behind the scars on her face, she’s still beautiful.

It wasn’t my fault –
The truck came out of nowhere and slammed right into the passenger side.
I don’t – I don’t recollect much of what happened.
All I know is they told me Anna is in a coma and all I had were a few
bumps and bruises.
How is that fair?
She’s only 12 ya know?
She’s never driven a car or gone to party past ten –
Never been in High School –
She’s never even had a real boyfriend, or a first kiss.
I just want her to wake up.

It’s just not fair.
So many people waste the lives they’ve been given.
And she’s only 12 and she’s fighting for her life.
The doctors say her heart is fine –
Her body’s fine –
It’s just her brain.
But apparently that’s the most important part.
The monitor keeps steadily beeping.
But they say she’s not going to wake up.

God, I’m begging you.
I’ve never been a Christian woman and I know I haven’t come to you for much,
But please, Lord.
She’s too young, and I can’t be alone – I don’t care if that is selfish.
I want her to see the world,
All she’s ever known is this town and I need her to know there is more to life.
Please, please. I’ve never been one to beg,
But I’m begging.
I just want to see the light in her eyes again.
