Biography of Annamalai Reddiyar

Annamalai Reddiyar was a Tamil poet. He was born in Chennikulam, Sankarankoil taluk, Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.

From childhood Annamalai showed interest on Tamil poetry. He used to sing songs by roaming through the rocks near Chennikulam / karivalmvanthanallur, once he was singing songs poet "Ramasamy Kavirayar" noticed his talent in poetry, and he taught poetry to Annamalai Reddiyar. The songs composed by Annamalai reddiyar was of new trend.

First He went to 'SETHUR' Sundaradasa pandian, Then went to Thiruvaduthurai to learn ragas and thalas. He worked with Utrumalai Zamindar Iruthayala Maruthappa pandiyan as Samasthana Vithuvan.

He wrote the Kavadi Sindhu about Murugan (also known as Karthikeya, son of Shiva). He formed one special method of singing named Sindhu Ilakkiyam, the same we can see in some of bharathiyar songs. He died at he age of 26 due to illness. Vilathikulam has a Higher secondary school in name of Annamalai Reddiyar.
