I see in your reply to Marianne Reninger below that you live in Sarasota. I went to Sarasota twice because of a man named Elling Eide, who founded a private library dedicated to Chinese poetry and art. It was written up two weeks ago in the New York Times. The library was established to house Mr. Eide's book collection. There was a beautiful botanical garden on the site, abutting on that crescent beach of white sand. I visited the garden while Elling Eide was alive, before the Center was actually established. My brother is a board member of the Elling Eide Center. (Elling Eide was his classmate at Harvard.) . Here is a link to the New York Times article about it: :

So glad to have encountered Barry Middleton. He cares... about the writing, the speaker, the reader, and the content of his work. His poetry ranges from musical and rhyming, to analytical free verse, to poems that evoke memory, the past, and witness to history. As a fellow poet, Barry has been an inspiration to me and I appreciate this thoughtful commentaries, passion, and critical advice.

Wording of thoughtful, innovative, sensitive feelings in the poems of Barry Moddleton runs as clear waters do in peaceful creeks and you feel its dew painting your senses.

Marianne, I have lived in Sarasota since 1989. I commuted to Venice Hospital for work. My memory is poor by I vaguely remember The Wedgwood. Yes indeed it is a small world.

Barry, I just read your bio and didn't realize we were in Venice, Fl. at the same time! We lived there from 1974-1993. My husband, Jim, and I were raising our 2 kids, living on Fiesole St. on the island, and running our restaurant, The Wedgwood, and Everymans/(soon to be Stormin'Normans after Jim's brother Norm) . I was active in the Art League, member of Florida Artists Group, and writing some then too. In the 90's we moved to Asheville where we have lived ever since. My daughter Jill grew up to be a Child's Mental Health specialist, and now is a director at the Safe Children's Coalition run by the Y. Small world. Wish I had known you then. Where do you live now? Letter To Myself

I wish that I had written you
when I was young and strong and wise
I knew that I would never die
I'd face the world without disguise

but as I pen this note to you
I have grown old and tired and weak
but I recall that hopeful youth
it is to you that I must speak

I can but say what I was told
to quietly sit and watch the crowd
and see the good and evil there
and think before I speak aloud

and though I wrote it long ago
I would not take my own advice
and that has put me on this path
with wishing that I had thought twice

I've come to ...

A Woman

a woman I knew for a moment
when we danced for a season or two
was the comfort of stars and midnight
and a waltz and an I love you

why oh why
can love never stay
seasons turn
then drift away
