Poetry is very individual in form. Collins poems are conversational which I like. If you don't like his poetry you wouldn't like Seamus Haney either. Some poetry is great, some stinks. People who use a few words to describe a tree and throw in Greek goddesses are an example.. When I read Collins, I feel I know something about him. Not everyone has to like his writing. He does it for himself anyway.

To Kevan Murphie: Your not reading Robideaux's whole comment is hardly a refutation. You're not bored by Collins? Dust is more exciting! Robideaux is right. We have put this poetaster on a pedestal he does not deserve. His work is pathetic. Common, pedestrian, trivial. He has no vigor, no arrogance! We want fire from a poet laureate, not baby food! ! ! My own poetry would make this guy's best stuff look like tripe! ! ! I'd be willing to go on national television to prove it, too!

Best Poem of Billy Collins

The name of the author is the first to go
followed obediently by the title, the plot,
the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel
which suddenly becomes one you have never read,
never even heard of,

as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor
decided to retire to the southern hemisphere of the brain,
to a little fishing village where there are no phones.

Long ago you kissed the names of the nine Muses goodbye
and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag,
and even now as you memorize the order of the planets,

something else is slipping ...

On Turning Ten

The whole idea of it makes me feel
like I'm coming down with something,
something worse than any stomach ache
or the headaches I get from reading in bad light--
a kind of measles of the spirit,
a mumps of the psyche,
a disfiguring chicken pox of the soul.

You tell me it is too early to be looking back,
