As a poet, as a writer, as a human being, I have to confess that Charles Bukowski has been a BIG influence on me. If he never existed, I'd probably be completely lost (or maybe I'd BE Charles Bukowski, who knows... and who cares) . Some people have Jesus, some people have John Lennon, I have Charles Bukowski.

Bukowski would understand the difference between telling someone: A- what to think or: B- how to think. Most people would assume that both are an invasion/insult. If you do not have some sense of 'B', then you can only memorise the incoming bits of 'A'....and blindly hope. It's called Faith, I am led to believe....just look at the world.

i think he does write for the common man, for everyman. for the working class, the drunk, the beaten and for those who want more out of there shit life, more from the people they encounter. i love his work, its refreshing not to have dire sentimental untruths.his novel ham on rye which is also a great read will give you an insight into the man.

A Smile To Remember

we had goldfish and they circled around and around
in the bowl on the table near the heavy drapes
covering the picture window and
my mother, always smiling, wanting us all
to be happy, told me, 'be happy Henry!'
and she was right: it's better to be happy if you
can
but my father continued to beat her and me several times a week while
raging inside his 6-foot-two frame because he couldn't
understand what was attacking him from within.

my mother, poor fish,
wanting to be happy, beaten two or three times a
week, telling me to be happy: 'Henry, ...
