The Daffodil's Lesson
Sweet slender daffodil kissed by the mist,
The caress of her swirling sinuous vapours
Left you bejeweled with gems of the air.
Yet you will find that a bad bargain
When the sober light of heaven
Takes away the night’s fickle jewels.
You bartered your virgin kiss for
A thing of the heart’s delight;
But now the lover, the bribe and the kiss are long gone,
