It’s my birthday today, Mom.
I wish you were here to share it with me.
I miss your bright eyes
Your expectant smile
Your look of anticipation
As you watched whether or not the gift you made
Or the cake you baked with the candle placed atop
Pleased me.
Or how you would cherish the story of my birth
Remembering what a joy it was
For you to have your firstborn
And how you would stay up with me the night before
And when the hour of my birth was upon us,
You would happily retell the story
Of my, what was, to you, a glorious birth.
