Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon Quotes

  • ''I'm glad we've been bombed. It makes me feel I can look the East End in the face.''
Elizabeth, Queen Mother (b. 1900), British wife of King George VI of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. September 1940. quoted in King George VI, pt. 3, ch. 6, John Wheeler-Bennett (1958). Said to a policeman after the bombing of Buckingham Palace by German planes. The East End—predominantly working-class—bore the brunt of the bombing during the blitz on London in World War II. When it was suggested that the royal family be evacuated, the Queen is reported to have said, "The children will not leave unless I do. I shall not leave unless their father does, and the King will not leave the country in any circumstances whatever."
