On winning a Grammy award for her album, Elizabeth Cotten Live!, which was voted the "Best ethnic or traditional folk recording" of 1984. A "singer, storyteller, composer, guitarist, and banjo player," she began performing professionally at age sixty-seven, after decades spent working as a housekeeper, and continued until her death twenty-eight years later.
