Janet Malcolm Quotes

  • ''Fidelity to the subject's thought and to his characteristic way of expressing himself is the sine qua non of journalistic quotation.''
Janet Malcolm (b. 1934), U.S. author. The Journalist and the Murderer, "Afterword," (1990). Malcolm was at the center of a legal dispute in which she was accused of fabricating quotations. In her book, Malcolm argued that accurate quotation is impossible: "When we talk with somebody, we are not aware of the language we are speaking.
