I was supposed to retire when I was seventy-two years old, but I was seventy-seven when I retired. On my seventy-sixth birthday a lady had triplets. It was quite a birthday present.

Josephine Riley Matthews (b. 1897), African American midwife. As quoted in I Dream a World, by Brian Lanker (1989).
A licensed midwife in South Carolina, she safely delivered more than 1,300 babies. Matthews graduated from high school in 1971 at age seventy-four and, in 1976, was named South Carolina's Woman of the Year and Outstanding Older American.
