Biography of Lewis MehlMadrona

Born near the coal fields,
in a small college town,
with clean hands and tablecloths
small Baptist college
where grandmother worked
at the Boone Tavern
and mother quilted her way through school.
Blended like all mountain country folk
blue grass Cherokee bandstand
sweat lodges and Bibles;
It's all mixed up and I've been
that way ever since.

Spirits Took On Skins

Some spirits took on skins

Spirits wondered what skins to take
One became wolf and opened its eyes
to big teeth.

Eventually wolf became a leader and
lived alongside the humans.
