I Want My Big Toe

It was just a child's tale
Told in a voice so low
The little ones moved closer
To hear moans for his toe.

'I want my big toe! '
The moan o'er and o'er
The toe mysteriously missing
For starvelings on the floor.

A chilling thing the story
An old man cut off his toe
With a big sharp knife in a potato field
As he worked to and fro.

'Twas during the Irish famine
Cynical misuse of the land
Children knew the story by heart
Holding each other's hand.

Skipping in a circle the Innocents' way
Singing the brutal truth
Waiting to avenge...
