Well to this Joe Walter' she is. Obviously a wonderful stutter so step off. She's first on the list. Some poeple thinks better than Shakespeare. I bet she's a million times better than u. I bet you couldn't write a good poem to save your life. So don't judge some one else.

Number one on this list? Are you kidding me? She shouldnt even be spoken of in the same sentence as a hundred other poets on this list... Top 500, if she made that i'd be suprised and intrigued, but top 300? 200? 100! ? Ignorance... Step down Shakespeare, Burns and Pope the world has forgotten how to read you.

Maya Angelou writes and speaks with such depth and substance; a true inner wisdom which transform the reader to better their inner self. Personally, my poetry is as of an infantile crawl compared to such a metaphoric genius and stateswoman as Maya Angelou! She has gained my vote not only for women's rights but for the great lady (and poetess) , she truly is. Thank You Maya for helping me to reach for the stars.

There is no way in the world that Phenomenal Woman is a better poem than any Robert Frost poem. Was the vote manipulated by some special interest group? The poetic structure is very poor: compare its format and rhyming with The Road Not Taken, for example.
I just joined this group, so I may be repeating other comments. But I think the members of this site need a reality check here.

There is NO WAY Maya Angelou should be #3 after Shakespeare? ! ! Really? ! She has only done a few dozen poems. Emily Dickerson has done over 1,000. Stop with the political correctness. She might belong at the bottom of the 500 list if at all. Get real people.

I absolutely LOVE Maya Angelou, I grew up watching my sister perform Phenomenal Woman which made me read and develop a love for poetry. I even tried to write like her.....I doubt that was a goal I actually reached lol. Although her work greatly contributed to my style of writing. I remember the first time I read Still I Rise amazing!

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my ...

Million Man March Poem

The night has been long,
The wound has been deep,
The pit has been dark,
And the walls have been steep.

Under a dead blue sky on a distant beach,
I was dragged by my braids just beyond your reach.
Your hands were tied, your mouth was bound,
You couldn't even call out my name.
